Charter Dinner - 9th April 2010 - Falmouth Beach Hotel Presidents Handover Dinner - Twinned with Lions Club of Midrand, Republic of South Africa and The Cousin Jack's Lions Club of Grass Valley, California. USA Ladies Darts Marathon, Open Air Markets, Book Stalls Crystal Golf Tournament, Christmas Hampers for the Needy, Bacon Buttie Trailer, Senior Citizens Party.... WELCOME TO OUR NEW PRESIDENT As incoming President I would first like to congratulate my predecessor Lion Ken Hart on the completion of a very successful year and to say what a wonderful job he did for the Club as President, most ably assisted of course by Barbara his wife. This culminated in him achieving his objective of raising enough money to provide a specialist chair for the use of Huntington’s disease sufferers in a local Care Home. On Sunday 5th July 2009 I was officially installed into my new position at the extremely enjoyable and well attended ‘Handover Lunch’ that was held at the Penmorvah Manor Hotel in Budock Water. At the same time I handed over the Social Chairman’s duties to my new Vice President, Lion Robin Knuckey. As far as the coming year is concerned, I am very well aware of the present economic climate and the fact that the resulting ‘Credit Crunch’ is having an adverse effect on all charities, but especially the smaller ones which tend to suffer disproportionately. So with this in mind, it is my intention to support a number of small local charities as my project this year, instead of concentrating our efforts on just one specific organisation. I am pleased to say the diary for the year ahead is beginning to take shape, a busy and, with any luck, a rewarding year is in prospect. Finally, on behalf of the Officers and the Members of the Lions Club of Truro, I would like to thank you all for your support in the past and hopefully your continued support in the future; whilst both I and my wife, Glenys, look forward with anticipation to seeing you on as many occasions as possible throughout my Presidential year. Regards, Lion Clive Pearson, President 2009 / 10 And its goodbye from him...... Hi All - Well it’s a year gone by so quickly! I was very proud to be Truro Lions Club President, 2008-2009 and I hope that I carried out my role in a professional manner becoming of this post. Supporting me all the way was my wife Barbara. We both have made a lot of new friends over the past year, attending many club and civic events. On behalf of both of us I would like to thank all my fellow Lions, their wives and also the great support from LiSA members and friends. We covered a lot of events to raise money but one of my highlights of the year included the handing over of the specialist chair to aid Huntington’s patients to have the proper care that they deserve. Also on Charter Night to present my friend and fellow Lion Keith the British Lions Bert Mason Award for Humanitarian Services - only three awarded to our Club members in 38 years. It is now my pleasure to pass on the role to a fellow Lion and friend Clive Pearson and his wife Glenys who I’m sure you will support them as you supported me and Barbara. Once again thank you all for your support. After all the trials and tribulations we were pleased to hand over a cheque for £250 to Penair School for their Youth Rugby Tour. DARTS MARATHON Although entries were down this year we hope to have raised in excess of £2,000 to be shared between the Penhaligon’s Friends and Handstand charities. The presentation evening was at the Punch Bowl & Ladle on Wednesday 26th August. LIONS CHARITY SUMMER FAIR This year’s event on Lemon Quay on 22 August attracted over a dozen other small charities joining us in raising much needed funds. This is very much in line with President Clive’s wish this year to look out for the smaller local charities which maybe feeling the pinch. LIONS CRYSTAL GOLF DAY At Truro Golf Club Friday 11 September is again expected to be a busy day in the Lions calendar. As we go to print we have a full entry of 52 teams of four golfers entered with many teams on the waiting list – such is the esteem this event has achieved over its 14 years. We will be sharing the proceeds between Children’s Hospice SW Precious Lives Appeal and the BEEN Foundation. This latter charity was formed recently in memory of Truro golfer Ben Enoch, aged 17, who earlier this summer was tragically killed in a motor accident on the way to a National golf event. It will benefit young aspiring Cornish golfers, who maybe disadvantaged by finance or access, to enable them to have coaching lessons and travel assistance to out of County events. The evening presentations start at 7.30 pm and include a raffle and auction followed by a disco – do come along and join in the fun – good bar prices!
